Know what it's like if things run the wrong way, but don't worry. Sometimes you look at them after some time has passed, and they fire up all new ideas.
Use the ink splotches to create something else out of those. Could be foul breath or some eerie gusts of hell fire on the altered colours version. The one eye could be a blind eye, for example. If it was of a cold dim watery blue, set that way in the other version, sending out an icey light or such...would look pretty scary as for a contrast to the hell-like and hot coloured surrounding.
